You're Hired! Encouraging the employment of ex-offenders

Synopsis

Each year, in England and Wales, approximately 66,000 offenders will return to society from prison. The estimated total cost of re-offending to society is £13 billion per year. You're Hired! investigates ways of encouraging the employment of ex-offenders, thus reducing these figures.

    Changes to Incapacity Benefit and Income Support, plus the ending of the Flexible New Deal (FND) with the Work Programme, mean that two million people could soon be on the new ‘Work Programme’ – set to launch next summer. While the ‘Jobs Guarantee’ and ‘Future Jobs Fund’ have been ended by the new Government, the Coalition has stated that self employment should be seen as a route out of worklessness, and has announced a rejuvenated version of the ‘enterprise allowance’. However, there are still some concerns over the availability of jobs in the private sector and public sector in the coming years as the Work Programme begins.
