Measure for measure: Using outcome measures to raise standards in the NHS

Thursday, 19 July 2007

The notion that more sophisticated patient outcome data would act as an incredible spur to performance in the NHS has been validated by new research conducted on behalf of the UK’s leading centre-right think tank, Policy Exchange.

Policy Exchange’s Public Services Research Director, Gavin Lockhart, explained the premise behind the research: “There remains a real lack of understanding about the clinical effectiveness of treatments. We felt that it was time to measure whether patients got better after treatment.

Measure for measure presents a vision of the potential future landscape of healthcare information which would provide accountability, promote increased patient trust, and improve performance.
