University of life may be the only alternative

Anna Fazackerley writes in the Express about the impact of cutting university funding

"Last summer many universities ignored the Government’s strict cap on student numbers and quietly let extra applicants in. They are sorry now. The munificent Lord Mandelson has told them that they will be fined £3,700 for every student they snuck in over the authorised maximum. In short there is no wriggle room."

"This is all pretty bewildering when you remember that Labour has spent years trumpeting its plan to send 50 per cent of young people to university. This number was plucked out of the thin air of Whitehall simply because it sounded rather good. The action hasn’t matched the rhetoric."

"Did they just not do the sums on how much this would cost? Or when it suddenly looked like the numbers might rocket did they decide the target was pointless after all?"
