Culture: Boom or Bust?
Policy Exchange and Southbank Centre present this event to debate whether the economic downturn could be good for the UK arts and cultural sector.
We can now announce our full line-up of panel members. They are: Luke Johnson, an ‘unrepentant capitalist’ and Chairman-elect of the RSA; Stephen Bayley, one of the world's best known commentators on modern culture; Toby Young, journalist and author of ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’; Josie Rourke, Artistic Director of the Bush Theatre; and Marcus Davey, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the Roundhouse.

The event will be chaired by Anna Fazackerley, Head of Arts and Culture at Policy Exchange, and introduced by Jude Kelly OBE, Artistic Director of Southbank Centre. The debate takes place against the backdrop of a widely regarded ‘golden age’ for the arts and extraordinary turmoil in the UK economy. Will 2009 bring only doom and gloom in terms of funding, cut-backs and playing safe? Or could the constrained economic environment have positive consequences for encouraging creativity and innovation, introducing new collaborations and changing personal values?
