Terrorism and security

Threats to our security are at a level that would have been unthinkable only a decade ago. Policy Exchange's research programme on terrorism and security, led by Dean Godson, is an attempt to chart a course through these often novel threats, especially the intersection of rogue states and terrorist groups.

In Regime Change: It's Been Done Before, an international group of observers examine case studies of regime change across different regions and periods, including Germany and Japan after WW2 and the current mission in Afghanistan. The follow-up report, Taming Terrorism: It's Been Done Before, was a collection of essays by five distinguished academics looking at how other countries had dealt with terrorist threats, including Italy and Japan.

Our work has also examined how Britain's defence industry can be reformed to ensure we are properly and affordably equipped to cope with modern security threats. The Best Kit: Why Britain's Defence Doesn't Need An All-British Defence Industry should buy more equipment from abroad and allow domestic contractors to be bought up by foreign ones.

Our most recent report is also our most acclaimed and influential. In When Progressives Treat With Reactionaries, Martin Bright uncovers how the British state continues to ignore moderate Muslim organisations in favour of more unsavoury ones. It helped Policy Exchange win Prospect's Think Tank of the Year prize for 2006 and is widely regarded as influencing the announcement by Ruth Kelly, Communities Secretary, of a change in the Government's approach to Muslim organisations.
